MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) will conduct an investigation into the gun attack on a candidate for mayor in Misamis Occidental on March 13.
CHR spokesperson Jacqueline de Guia said their regional office in Northern Mindanao would look into the incident involving George Matunog Jr., who is running for mayor of Calamba town.
Matunog was shot while he was walking toward his home in Barangay Southwestern Poblacion.
“The CHR condemns this brazen assault on an individual’s right to life and expresses its concern over this recent incident,” De Guia said.
She urged the government to swiftly act and investigate incidents of election-related violence and bring the perpetrators to justice.
“We cannot allow this culture of violence and impunity be a norm during the election period,” De Guia said.
The CHR has initiated investigations into related incidents since the start of the election period.
