DILG to UP: File complaint on employee’s arrest

MANILA, Philippines — The University of the Philippines (UP) should file a formal complaint before the Department of the Interior and Local Government probes the reported illegal entry of policemen at the university’s Diliman campus in Quezon City over the weekend, a DILG official said yesterday.

DILG spokesman Undersecretary Jonathan Malaya made the statement in response to the arrest of Felipe Nario Jr., an administrative assistant at the UP-Diliman Asian Center, and his companion on Sunday by agents of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, for allegedly placing bets in an illegal online game. They were later released after probers found the game was legal.

Malaya said UP should raise the issue before the technical working group reviewing the 1992 accord between UP and the DILG, which prohibits the entry of police officers in the state university’s campuses without prior notice.

“That is the proper venue for issues concerning the implementation of the agreement,” he said in a text message.
