COTABATO CITY, Philippines — Thirty-one boxes of imported cigarettes that were believed smuggled into the country were seized by authorities in Indanan, Sulu on Saturday.

The contraband was found abandoned by police officers conducting night patrol in Sitio Laum Niyog, Barangay Kajatian, according to Maj. Edwin Sapa, Indanan police chief.

The boxes contained the brands Canon, Famous, B&R and Stone. Authorities have yet to determine the amount of the cigarettes.

Sapa said the persons who were supposed to deliver the merchandise to a buyer fled after they spotted the police officers.

He said the cigarettes would be turned over to the office of the Bureau of Customs in Jolo for proper disposition.
