MANILA, Philippines — The University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City will close its campus to the public on weekends amid the surge in COVID-19 cases.

In an advisory issued yesterday, the university said all public places on the campus, including the academic oval, College of Human Kinetics, National Science Complex, Child Study Center and bicycle routes would be closed starting at 4 p.m. on Friday until Sunday night.

“This is a precautionary measure following a spike in COVID cases in UP Diliman associated with new variants,” the university said.

Campus residents are allowed to do outdoor exercises only in their respective areas. They should observe health protocols such as wearing of face masks and shields.

As of last week, UP Diliman recorded 19 active cases of COVID-19 involving one faculty member, a student, eight staff, four dependents and five residents of Barangay UP Campus. Eleven have mild symptoms while eight were asymptomatic.
